The Telangana government has introduced a groundbreaking initiative allowing free bus travel for women, including girls, students, and Hijras (transgenders). Here are the details you need to know:
Eligibility and Identification:
RTC MD VC Sajjanar clarified that age is not a factor. Women must possess either a Mahalakshmi card or any identity card. Initially, one can travel without an identity card for a week, but afterward, it is essential to carry and show the card to the conductor each time you board the bus.
Zero Ticket System:
Upon displaying the identity card, the conductor will issue a zero ticket, indicating that the journey is free. This applies to travel within the borders of Telangana. However, for cross-border journeys, a separate ticket is required for the additional distance. This scheme covers a vast network of 7929 buses in Telangana.
Scheme Launch:
The initiative is set to be inaugurated by women ministers and CM Revanth Reddy on Sonia Gandhi’s birthday. This marks the commencement of the first scheme under the new government, aligning with the promise of six guarantees. It is important to note that the scheme is exclusively for residents of Telangana.
Card Download and Benefits:
The government emphasizes that women can use any identity card initially, with the option to download the Mahalakshmi card soon. This card holds significance beyond bus travel, as it is required for availing a Rs.500 gas cylinder and Rs.2500 monthly financial assistance. In the absence of the Mahalakshmi card, alternatives like Aadhaar or Voter ID can be presented.
