1. New Ration Cards Announcement:
The Telangana government has approved the issuance of new ration cards, marking a significant development. Starting from December 28, eligible individuals can submit applications for these new ration cards. The initiative also allows for modifications, additions, and error corrections in existing ration cards. Gram Sabhas, scheduled in every village from the 28th of this month, will play a crucial role in determining beneficiaries for the new ration cards, as well as decisions related to pensions and housing. Civil Supplies Minister Uttam Kumar Reddy revealed that quality thin rice will be made available at ration shops.
2. Gram Sabhas’ Role and Decision Making:
The Gram Sabhas, set to convene in every village, will serve as the platform for decision-making regarding the issuance of new ration cards. Beneficiaries will be selected based on the Gram Sabha’s decisions, influencing not only ration cards but also considerations for pensions and housing. Minister Uttam Kumar Reddy emphasized the importance of these community-level discussions in determining the distribution of essential resources, fostering a participatory approach.
3. Previous Government’s Inaction:
Under the previous BRS government, no new ration cards were issued for nearly six years, leading to various challenges for the citizens. The inability to register new names in existing cards meant many individuals were excluded from vital services like Arogyashri. The current surge in applications for new ration cards reflects the substantial demand created by the prolonged absence of this essential service. The Congress government, acknowledging these issues, has increased the medical treatment limit under the Arogyasree scheme to Rs. 10 lakhs.
4. Impact on Families and Services:
Due to the absence of new ration cards, numerous families were unable to access benefits such as free rice, and the opportunity to add their children’s names to the cards was nonexistent. Approximately 50 thousand applications for new ration cards remain pending in each district, highlighting the urgency of addressing this backlog. Moreover, each district faces a backlog of 60 to 90 thousand applications for the registration of children’s names in ration cards, indicating the extent of the challenge.
5. Addressing Backlog and Enhancements:
Recognizing the pressing need, the government is taking proactive steps to address the backlog of pending applications for new ration cards and the registration of children’s names. The increased medical treatment limit under the Arogyasree scheme reflects a commitment to enhancing essential services. The announcement signals hope for thousands of families who have been awaiting the issuance of new ration cards, paving the way for improved access to vital resources and benefits.
