COVID-19 Cases Increase in Maharashtra

In recent days, the COVID-19 virus, which had been largely under control, is making a comeback in the state of Maharashtra. The number of patients affected by the virus has gone up slightly once again.

Discovery of New Variant: Omicron EG.5.1

Health experts have identified a new variant of the coronavirus known as Omicron EG.5.1. This variant was first detected in a patient in India. Dr. Rajesh Karkte, a senior researcher from Maharashtra, shares that this variant, Omicron EG.5.1, was initially spotted in May. However, its prevalence was low in June and July, with other variants like XBB.1.16 and XBB.2.3 being more common.

Surge in Cases and Variant Link

As reported by the state health department, the number of COVID-19 cases has risen in August. While there were 70 active cases by the end of July, the count rose to 115 on August 6. The increase is thought to be linked to the Omicron EG.5.1 variant, which had caused concerns in England due to its rapid spread.

Characteristics of the New Variant

Researchers have studied the new Omicron variant (EG.5.1) and found that it has emerged due to genetic changes in the original Omicron variant. Its symptoms are similar to the earlier Omicron variant, including runny nose, severe headache, sore throat, frequent sneezing, and body pains. If someone experiences these symptoms, it’s recommended to consult a doctor promptly.

Tracking the Variant and Active Cases

Although the Omicron EG.5.1 variant has not affected many patients across India, experts are closely monitoring those admitted to hospitals. Currently, Mumbai has 43 active COVID-19 cases, followed by Pune with 34 and Thane with 25. A single active patient each has been reported in Raigarh, Sangli, Sholapur, Satara, and Palghar.
