Rising Rice Prices and Government Actions
The prices of rice in the country have surged significantly, prompting the central government to take action. Initially, a ban was imposed on the export of non-basmati rice, but with prices still unchecked, further steps were deemed necessary.
Introduction of Bharat Rice
To address the escalating prices, the government introduced Bharat Rice, available at Rs.29 per bag. Offered in both 5 kg and 10 kg bags, Bharat Rice, including Bharat Biyani, hit the shelves on Wednesday, catering to diverse consumer needs.
Distribution Channels and Availability
The distribution of rice is facilitated through various channels, including the Food Corporation of India and the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation. Rice is also accessible at Central Bhandar sales centers and National Cooperative Consumers Federation centers. Despite the demand, India rice is yet to reach Hyderabad, possibly due to its non-fortified status in Telangana.
Understanding Fortified Rice vs. Non-fortified Rice
Fortified rice undergoes a process where essential micronutrients are added to enhance its nutritional value. This differs from non-fortified rice, which lacks such enrichment. Currently, Telangana supplies fortified rice through ration shops, while the non-fortified status of India rice may hinder its distribution in the state.
Alternative Offerings and Sales Centers
In light of the rice situation, alternative staples like wheat flour and pulses are being offered through NAFED. Wheat flour is priced at Rs.27.60 per kg, while groundnut is available at Rs.60 per kg. Sales centers across Hyderabad ensure accessibility, catering to various localities including Hafiz Peta, Malak Peta, and LB Nagar.
